Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park
o The fort and grounds are extensive with many displays and often living history days. Being in the centre of the city, it is also near many places to eat and it is not far from the may other museums and historical sights in this city, which ranks as one of the most historic in the state. In the heart of Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort is one of the most important historic buildings in the state and one of the largest and most extensive buildings from the Mexican or Spanish eras of California history. Although part has been reconstructed and renovated, part is also original. This settlement was instrumental in starting the Gold Rush. It was also Sutter’s Fort which the now-infamous Donner Party tried to reach and it was here where the survivors reached safety. Finally, it marked the beginning of what became the city of Sacramento, one of the most important commercial and transit centers for the Gold Rush and Transcontinental Railroad.
