Two students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) are starting their summer internships this month in the U.S. Grains Council’s (USGC’s) Mexico City and Washington, D.C. offices, thanks to generous support from the Nebraska Corn Board.
“Most of us can thank an internship for helping us get a foot in the door in our careers, and it is a very valuable experience to learn what types of working environments work well and which do not,” said Heidi Bringenberg, USGC assistant director in Mexico. “It is imperative for organizations like ours to support young people, especially women in agriculture, because they will shape the future of this industry.”
Alyssa Ehler will work in the Council’s Mexico City office. Ehler is majoring in political science and agricultural economics with experience working as a campaign intern and for a financial company. She is also active in the Nebraska Human Resource Institute and on various committees with the Association of Students at UNL’s student government.
During her internship, Ehler will help improve the Council’s contact management system to develop improved tracking methods for customer meetings and contacts. Ehler will also watch and learn from the Council’s staff and consultants in Mexico as they work on trade policy issues and trade constraints in the top U.S. export market.
Halle Ramsey will work in the Council’s Washington, D.C.-based headquarters office. She is majoring in agricultural and environmental sciences communication with prior experience in hog and cattle operations in Nebraska.
Ramsey will assist the Council’s membership and communications department on a variety of outreach and meetings-based initiatives throughout the summer.
The internship program is designed to provide students with an overview of Nebraska’s corn industry through real-world professional examples and experiences. In addition to the two students working with the Council, student interns will also join the U.S. Meat Export Federation, National Corn Growers Association, Nebraska Corn Board and Nebraska Corn Growers Association for the summer.
All of the students will document their experiences through progress updates and social media posts. To keep up with the students throughout the summer, visit nebraskacorn.gov or follow the Nebraska Corn Board on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat (necornboard) and YouTube.
Please join the Council in welcoming Alyssa and Halle!
