The U.S. Grains Council use of Foreign Market Development (FMD) and Market Access Program (MAP) funds help expand exports of U.S. Distiller’s Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) to Egypt. In 2006, DDGS was registered as a feed ingredient in the Egyptian Official Feed Ingredient List. The Council later assisted Cairo 3A company (an ADM Agent) in importing the first shipment of 6,000 metric tons of DDGS to Egypt. Using FMD and MAP funding, the Council conducted programs to demonstrate DDGS’ nutritional value and proper levels of use in feed rations for the poultry, dairy and beef cattle, and aquaculture industries.
This effort was supported by a promotional campaign that included conferences where U.S. experts promoted DDGS and scientific and practical publications that demonstrated the nutritive value and economic advantage of its use. Imports of DDGS grew from 6,000 in the year 2006 to almost 100,000 MT in 2010.
In November 2011, the USGC also organized a feed grain co-products buyer’s conference in Geneva.Imports of DDGS in 2011 reached 140,000 MT while it reached 145,000 MT in 2012.
Future projections indicate that imports are likely to reach 350,000 MT in 2025. Egypt is now the third-largest DDGS importing country in the Middle East region. Since 2006 till 2012, Egypt has imported about 545,000 MT of U.S. DDGS, which is equivalent to $153 million, which is an investment return of $1 per $285 sales.
