Earlier this month, more than 1,800 poultry industry stakeholders attended the eighth annual Tanzania Poultry Show (TPS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The TPS, organized by the Poultry Association of Tanzania (PAT) and supported by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC), showcases the latest advancements and production technologies available to support the growth and expansion of the poultry sector in Tanzania.
Since its inception in 2015, the TPS has remained a flagship event for the poultry industry, bringing together local, regional and international companies and industry experts. The event serves as a key opportunity for networking among attendees, with the event combining technical seminars with an exhibition floor. This year’s 55 exhibitors from eight countries set a new TPS record and shared insights into critical products and services available for poultry farming.
“The Council’s initial engagement in Tanzania began 10 years ago under its Food for Progress (FPP) project, working to support the development of the local poultry industry. Part of that support included the creation of a professional poultry industry association, which would later become known as the PAT,” said Katy Wyatt, USGC East Africa program consultant.
“PAT represents 15 poultry and feed industry stakeholders in Tanzania and its major accomplishments include the TPS and advocating for government policies and regulations for the improvement of the poultry industry. Additionally, the Council has worked to support PAT to provide comprehensive poultry and feed manufacturing seminars for broiler and layer production reaching more than 5,000 producers.”’
The Council sponsored members based in Arusha, Morogoro and Tanga to attend the expo and more than 100 producers from these regions attended the exhibit, as well as representatives from the Tanzania Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.
Held over two days, participants were welcomed to attend more than 15 seminars focused on relevant topics to the poultry industry, including poultry management tactics in tropical climates, advancements in biosecurity protocols and animal feed standard requirements in Tanzania, among other topics.
As in previous years, the TPS was held in conjunction with World Egg Day, which works to promote egg consumption and education regarding the nutritional benefits of eggs globally. While poultry demand is growing in Tanzania, egg consumption remains well under the Food and Agricultural Organization’s (FAO) recommendation of 300 eggs per year (per person), at an estimated 106 eggs per person.
The Tanzania Layer Farmer Association (TAFLA) and PAT participated in this year’s activities by donating egg trays to local schools, including speakers focused on the nutritional benefits of eggs at the TPS seminars, and promoting egg-based meals throughout the two-day expo.
“The Council’s engagement with PAT has been effective in bringing the poultry industry value chain together, strengthening its voice to address the current challenges and limitations that hinder local production,” Wyatt said.
“Our collaboration will continue, making sure the association continues supporting the industry’s development and expansion and advocating for a pro-trade environment that will provide opportunities for U.S. feed grains to support Tanzania and the surrounding region.”
