USGC Annual Meeting: Speaker to Discuss Producer Challenges of Meeting Global Demand

Dr. Hobart Beeghly has been named the third panelist in a session that will examine issues around “growing more with less at the U.S. Grains Council’s 51st Annual Board of Delegates Meeting July 25-27 in San Francisco, Calif.

Beeghly currently leads product management for Monsanto’s U.S. Seeds & Traits organization where he is responsible for product strategy, portfolio planning and life cycle management of the corn, oilseed, cotton and specialty crop businesses.

Some anticipate global food production will need to double by 2050 to meet the demand of a growing global population and an increasing number of people who improve their economic status and can afford more and higher quality food. At the same time, it is becoming clear that farmers will be under pressure to meet this demand by producing more grain and food with less — less water, less land and fewer crop inputs.

During the panel, Beeghly will provide insight into what’s coming next in terms of seed technology and how farmers will be able to utilize such advances to help meet future grain and food demands while caring for the soil and using fewer inputs.

The panel will also feature Ratan Lal, a professor of soil science in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University, and Steve “Doc Blizzard, director of farming for the Lagomarsino Group in California and Chairman of the California Apple Commission. Lal will discuss agronomy and soil issues, while Blizzard will cover water restrictions and related issues.

The session has time built in to ensure a lively discussion and questions from attendees.
