Ambassador Susan C. Schwab, who served as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) from 2006 to 2009, will give her insight into global trade talks at the U.S. Grains Council’s 51st Annual Board of Delegates Meeting July 25-27 in San Francisco, Calif.

Specifically, Schwab will give her thoughts on how the United States, and U.S. agriculture in particular, should engage in trade negotiations given the uncertain outlook for the Doha round of World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations. She will discuss the significance of current trade agreements to the U.S. economy, and what are the prospects for Doha, various regional trade agreements and future agreements of interest to U.S. agriculture, industry and services.

As USTR, Schwab was a member of President George W. Bush’s cabinet and served as his principal advisor, negotiator and spokesperson on international trade and related issues.

During her tenure, she successfully concluded free trade agreements (FTA) with Peru, Colombia, Panama and South Korea; achieved Congressional ratification of FTAs with Bahrain, Oman and Peru, and oversaw entry-into-force of agreements of nine FTAs and dozens of other trade and investment agreements. Schwab also oversaw the accession of Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Ukraine to the WTO, as well as conclusion of the bilateral U.S.-Russia WTO accession agreement.
