Second Annual Poultry Show In Tanzania Promotes Good Practices, Egg Consumption

The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) recently supported the Poultry Association of Tanzania (PAT) as it hosted the second annual Tanzania Poultry Show to present innovative production techniques and exhibit new equipment to local industry members from international and local companies.

The theme of the show this year was “An Egg a Day” to support promotion of egg consumption in Tanzania, and it was held in conjunction with a World Egg Day celebration sponsored by Novus International.

It was attended by 1,400 participants and 20 international and local exhibitors. Throughout the show, presentations were made by local and international industry members on methods of improving poultry and feed production.

“It is incredibly exciting to see this level of participation in the show two years in a row,” said Anne Zaczek, USGC manager of global development programs. “The poultry industry in Tanzania is so eager to learn improved techniques, and PAT being able to offer them a setting where they can learn from one another as well as from international participants is an incredible value to the industry as a whole.”

The Government of Tanzania was a strong supporter of the event, and Dr. Mary Mashingo, permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, inaugurated the show.
“Everyone is glad to see government support at this level for the Tanzanian poultry industry,” Zaczek said. “PAT is developing strong relationships with the government as well as other poultry associations within the Sub-Saharan Africa region that will only strengthen their ability to represent the needs of the industry.”

The industry show was complimented by a public event attracting 500 adults and children who enjoyed games focused on eggs and chicken and learned about the benefits of eating eggs.

The Council’s ongoing work in Tanzania is focused on building a regional support system to help the industry associations grow and provide local feed producers and farmers with knowledge and products to increase the quality of poultry products sold to consumers, which will lead to higher demand for coarse grains over the long term. This work is supported by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress grant.
