Japanese corn importers and feed manufacturers delivered some pointed messages in a meeting at the U.S. Grains Council headquarters earlier this month. Representing the largest importer of U.S. corn, the Japanese delegation affirmed their appreciation for our long-standing trade relationship and for the opportunity to meet regularly to discuss issues in corn trade. They then presented their list of concerns.
Tom Sleight, USGC president & CEO, noted the importance of the meeting. “This engagement fits well as part of our year of trade servicing. While the Council maintains regular contacts with major Japanese customers, these semi-annual encounters give us an opportunity to listen to their issues.
“We cannot resolve things immediately, but we and they appreciate the face-to-face dialog. This is a prime example of how the Council acts as a bridge between our international customers and U.S. producers. These meetings are part of our ongoing commitment to sustaining a consistent, year round dialogue with customers.”
The Council hosted this meeting with representatives of the Japanese Feed Manufacturers Association and the Japan Feed Trade Association. U.S. participants in the meeting also included representatives from the National Corn Growers Association and USDA’s Federal Grains Inspection Service.
