Council Educates Peruvians Firsthand on DDGS Imports and Marketing

The Peruvian government recently removed a technical barrier to imports of distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), clearing the way for imports to occur. However, Peruvian importers are wary about how to manage importing DDGS and how to proceed in marketing the product to local livestock producers.

During a recent visit to Peru by the U.S. Grains Council’s regional director, an importing group, Alicorp, requested assistance in addressing these concerns. This week, the Council sponsored a delegation from Alicorp to travel to Costa Rica to meet with DDGS importers and end-users that currently utilize the product.

“This program provided the Alicorp delegation the opportunity to see firsthand how another country utilizes DDGS, building their confidence for import. The Costa Rican lessons in using DDGS can be applied in Peru to accelerate the importation and usage of this product., said Kurt Shultz, USGC regional director in Latin American and the Caribbean.

Peru has a market potential for 300,000 metric tons of DDGS annually, however both its poultry and dairy sectors need to be introduced to the benefits of this product.
