To highlight growing feed demand from Vietnam’s poultry, swine and aquaculture sectors and the U.S. Grains Council’s (USGC’s) work with them, in June, USGC representatives accompanied local officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS) and the U.S. Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City to the Phu My Port to evaluate the quality of a corn shipment as bulk vessels were unloading.
Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing feed markets in the world because of population and economic growth, and the country is a major buyer of corn and dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS). Vietnamese purchases of U.S. DDGS declined slightly in 2019/2020 from the prior year’s all-time high of 1.29 million metric tons to roughly 1.21 million metric tons. Still, ranking as the third-largest market for DDGS, Vietnam represented 11.5 percent of all purchases of the ethanol co-product in 2019/2020.
The Council has actively worked with the Vietnamese grain trade and feed industry for more than 20 years. The Council’s technical programs in Vietnam have focused on helping livestock producers and feed millers effectively use U.S. coarse grains and manage their operations efficiently. Trade servicing has also helped these customers gain familiarity with the U.S. grain marketing system, quality and price mechanisms.
