Director of Communications


Purpose of position:

The U.S. Grains Council’s director of communications reports to the director of strategic relations and is responsible for leading the Council’s day-to-day internal and external communications outreach to all Council stakeholders.  


  1. Design and execute communications strategies to raise the profile of U.S. Grains Council experts, expertise and its mission.
  2. Direct and supervise projects of the communications department, with emphasis on strategic approaches to communications programs and initiatives, staff/resource allocation and contractor/consultant operations.
  3. Lead and oversee writing and editing of articles, scripts, brochures, news releases, news updates, special reports, talking points and messages, and other Council materials, including Council website content and design.
  4. Develop cooperative working relationships with member organization communications staff and their representatives and members of the print and broadcast media.
  5. Provide leadership and direction in developing and carrying out specific communications functions, such as annual meetings and member missions.
  6. Represent communication issues in strategy discussions; act as a liaison with membership activities; and integrate staff effectively into communication efforts.
  7. Develop and manage departmental resources and budget.
  8. Serve as first point of contact for media requests and serve as a USGC spokesperson, when appropriate.
  9. Oversee staff and Board development as effective spokespeople for the Council, including materials and skills.
  10. Supervise and manage communications staff, including motivating and mentoring.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s of communications, journalism, marketing or similar field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to effectively develop, communicate and execute communications plans; will have mastery of outreach, branding and marketing principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience leading and motivating employees at various levels of responsibility.
  • Experience working well under pressure, determining priorities, and producing results
  • Experience with new and social media.  
  • Ability to effectively interact and maintain strong working relationships with a broad array of stakeholders, including high-level officials, members, the media and the public.  

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a results-driven approach and the ability to work independently.
  2. Strong presentation skills; capable of presenting complex material in an easy to understand format.
  3. Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, goals and project initiatives to meet deadlines.
  4. Highly organized and self-motivated; able to manage multiple tasks while functioning effectively as a team member under pressure.
  5. Holds a high attention to detail and can be flexible in a changing environment.
  6. Intermediate to advanced experience in Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and other desktop publishing tools.  
  7. Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner at all times.
