USGC President and CEO Thomas C. Dorr said U.S. farmers withstood challenges and are anticipated to have harvested the largest corn crop in history at 13.2 billion bushels as he addressed the attendees of the Wisconsin Corn/Soy Expo in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Dorr discussed the importance of looking outside the borders of the United States for opportunites for U.S. growers. Dorr also said the work the Council has done to build export market opportunities for distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is "nothing short of remarkable," with U.S. DDGS exports reaching nearly 5 million metric tons in 2009. Dorr also mentioned he was pleased to hear President Obama recognized the importance of exports in his State of the Union Address and hopes "this is an indication that the Adminstration will urge Congress to move forward with pending free trade agreements." According to USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates released Tuesday, U.S. corn yield is estimated at a record 165.2 bushels per acre in 2009. This is up 2.3 bushels from the December forecast and 4.9 bushels above the previous record of 160.3 bushels per acre set in 2004. Mike Deering, USGC director of communications, interviewed USGC director of biotechnology programs Rebecca Fecitt about the role biotechnology plays in the increase in corn yield. “We hope to see this upward trend in yields for U.S. corn continue. As science becomes even more sophisticated, it will help increase and maintain our yields. This will be instrumental in feeding the world’s forecasted 9.1 billion people by 2050,” said Fecitt.
