USGC CEO Cautiously Optimistic After Senate Ag Approves Farm Bill

U.S. Grains Council President and CEO Tom Sleight applauded the Senate Agriculture Committee for its work to approve farm bill legislation Tuesday. Sleight says he's optimistic - though cautious - because we've been down this road before. When it comes to the continued expansion of U.S. agricultural exports - he says it's important for Congress to approve a comprehensive, five-year farm bill before the current extension expires.

For the U.S. Grains Council, spring 2013 means last winter's budget uncertainty is behind us, and it's time to throw international market development programming back into high gear.
For most of the fall and winter, the failure of Congress to reauthorize the Farm Bill, the extended delay in passing the federal budget and uncertainty about the debt ceiling meant that the availability of Market Assessment Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program funds could not be assumed. That uncertainty, at least for the moment, has now lifted.

The U.S. Grains Council is preparing for its Officers Mission - along with the National Corn Growers Association - to meet with customers in Japan, Korea and China. USGC Chairman Don Fast says this mission is extremely important for U.S. grains because of competition for these markets from other countries - such as Argentina, Brazil, the Ukraine and India. USGC President and CEO Tom Sleight agrees this mission is critical.
