North-South American Maize Growers Form International Alliance

8739584340 2c04bf64d4_nThe U.S. Grains Council (USGC), along with the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), MAIZAR, representing Argentina producers and the maize supply chain and ABRAMILHO (Brazilian Association of Corn Producers) today signed a memorandum of understanding to form an alliance of North and South American maize (corn) producers to collaborate on a global basis to address key issues concerning food security, biotechnology, stewardship, trade and producer image. The organizations will function under the name, MAIZALL—The International Maize Alliance.

Delayed Planting in Northeast China Constrains 2013 Corn Area Growth

5785586737 4411b888fb_n (1)As is occurring in the United States, unseasonably cold and wet weather is causing farmers to delay planting as much as two weeks in Northeast China, China's largest corn production region. In the northernmost province of Heilongjiang, only a small proportion of land is planted and further delays are expected to cause farmers to switch out of corn and plant soybeans according to China's JCI Intelligence and Yumi.com, two agricultural market reporting firms.

Farm Bill Update

The perils-of-Pauline fiscal cliff melodrama that occurred on New Year's Day may be a fading memory, but the next Farm Bill drop dead date of October 1 is already fast approaching. The U.S. Grains Council does not lobby the Congress on legislative matters, but it is appropriate for us to remind stakeholders that the temporary extension of the Farm Bill through the end of this fiscal year is only a stopgap measure.

A new five year reauthorization of the Farm Bill is still urgently needed to avoid disruption or even termination of critically important export promotion programs for U.S. agricultural products.

USGC Co-Products Conference Reassures Long Term Korean Customers of US Partnership

During her presentation at a U.S. Grains Council organized conference in South Korea, Davis reassured longtime customers of the United States ability to produce enough for its three major markets: ethanol, domestic livestock and exports.

Sorghum Gaining International Momentum

Many commodities right now are feeling like second class citizens following a poor Chinese economic report and aggressive Federal stimulus purchasing of U.S. treasuries, which are channeling investors to U.S. equities.
