Decades of Service Earn Council Thanks

The U.S. Grains Council will honor two more individuals at the 10th International Marketing Conference and 53rd Annual Membership Meeting next week in Charleston, S.C., – the Kansas Corn Commission's Ken McCauley and the Texas Grain Sorghum Association's executive director, Wayne Cleveland.

Both are marking 10 years of contributions to the Council's export efforts, and for both, involvement goes beyond the status quo.

We anticipate a great meeting. We will hear exciting presentations from the Port of Charleston, a keynote from USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Darci Vetter, and a report from the Council's international directors on the changing political situation in a number of key markets. Producer and commodities panels will also explore rapidly changing dynamics in their sectors.

Port of Charleston: Committed to Growth

DSCN0880Deep water and an active commitment to even more harbor deepening have put the Port of Charleston on the map as a growth hub for U.S. ocean shipping. Despite a sluggish overall economy, container volume through Charleston was up nearly 10 percent in calendar year 2012, while non-containerized freight was up nearly 26 percent. Channel depth of 45 feet at mean low tide already gives Charleston the deepest water in the region, and with a tidal lift the port is able to serve vessels with up to 48 feet of draft. Charleston is not resting on its laurels, however, as it is aggressively planning for further deepening to accommodate the coming surge of post-Panamax ship traffic in coming years.

Corn Harvest Quality Report: High Marks from Foreign Buyers

"What we heard from buyers was essentially, 'this is great information, and we want more,'" said U.S. Grains Council Chairman Don Fast. "Since the Corn Harvest Quality Report was developed to serve buyers, it's good to know that we're hitting the mark."
