A group of grain buyers from Mexico will be in Nebraska and Kansas City next week to explore white corn production and contracting opportunities. The trip is in response to frost that damaged part of the white corn crop in Mexico earlier this year and is being organized and supported by the U.S. Grains Council, Nebraska Corn Board and Kansas Corn Commission.
“A significant portion of Mexico’s winter white corn crop was damaged, which has tortilla manufacturers concerned,” said Julio Hernandez, USGC director in Mexico. “The cost of replanting and a shortage of seed allowed only about half the acres to be replanted, and frost damage will likely impact overall yields.”

The cattle industry in Mexico’s southern states of Veracruz, Tabasco and Chiapas has millions of dual-purpose (milk and meat) cattle, making it a market of interest for distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), reports Julio Hernandez, U.S. Grains Council director in Mexico.
“Basically we were assessing the market and promoting the use of DDGS,” said Hernandez of his recent trip to the area. “There’s a lot of opportunity for DDGS with beef and dairy.”
Cattle producers in the region have active organizations that could help spread information about using DDGS.

The U.S.-Mexico long-haul trucking dispute could finally be resolved by late summer under an agreement announced by Presidents Barack Obama and Felipe Calderón last week.
Last year Mexico instituted $2.4 billion in retaliatory tariffs against U.S. exports, including pork and dairy products, because of the failure to resolve a dispute over allowing Mexican trucks and drivers to operate on long hauls in the United States.
“Our Council members have raised concerns about the possibility that corn, sorghum and distiller’s grains could become subject to these tariffs,” said Floyd Gaibler, U.S. Grains Council director of trade policy.Council “Road Show” Links Sorghum Buyers, Sellers

U.S. Grains Council staff just concluded a successful “road show” that brought together sorghum marketers with Mexican customers in Guadalajara, Torreón, Monterrey and Merida for briefings on U.S. sorghum supply, demand and pricing.
“We had 20 to 30 customers join us at each stop, and their comments at the debriefings were very positive,” reported Alvaro Cordero, USGC manager of international operations – marketing.
“The ‘road show’ gave them a chance to broaden their contacts,” he explained. “It was also an opportunity for trade servicing, for us to answer their questions.”
