"India may be the most complex market we have ever worked in," said U.S. Grains Council President and CEO Tom Sleight at the conclusion of his recent visit to the country. "We need to develop a consistent, strategic vision and plan to guide our appropriate level of engagement in India. Whatever happens in India, it will be a major player in the future of global food demand. We must resist over-valuing the India, just as we must resist undervaluing our engagement."

Recognizing its status as one of the United States' most important corn export markets, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Darci Vetter traveled to Taiwan last month to participate in meetings with the U.S.-Taiwan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement Council. While there, in a meeting organized by the American Institute in Taiwan, the U.S. Grains Council, along with a small group of other U.S. cooperators, had the opportunity to thank Vetter for her commitment to the international agriculture sector and, in particular, the goal of building U.S. exports.

For the U.S. Grains Council, spring 2013 means last winter's budget uncertainty is behind us, and it's time to throw international market development programming back into high gear.
For most of the fall and winter, the failure of Congress to reauthorize the Farm Bill, the extended delay in passing the federal budget and uncertainty about the debt ceiling meant that the availability of Market Assessment Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program funds could not be assumed. That uncertainty, at least for the moment, has now lifted.
