MAIZALL Launched; US, Argentina, Brazil Corn Alliance a Reality

"The major corn exporting countries have a tremendous opportunity," said U.S. Grains Council Chairman Don Fast, "and the formation this week of the MAIZALL Alliance is a big step towards turning that opportunity into a reality."MAIZALL is an alliance of the leading corn sector producer organizations in the three leading corn exporting countries, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina. A formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed May 14 by the presidents/chairmen of the U.S. Grains Council, the National Corn Growers Association, ABRAMHILO (Brazil), and MAIZAR (Argentina). The signing was the signature event of the 2013 MAIZAR national conference in Buenos Aires.

A memorandum of understanding was signed Tuesday to form an alliance of North and South American maize producers. U.S. Grains Council President and CEO Tom Sleight says the U.S. Grains Council, National Corn Growers Association, MAIZAR and ABRAMILHO will function under the name MAIZALL - The International Maize Alliance. The U.S. Grains Council (USGC), along with the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), MAIZAR, representing Argentina producers and the maize supply chain and ABRAMILHO (Brazilian Association of Corn Producers) today signed a memorandum of understanding to form an alliance of North and South American maize (corn) producers to collaborate on a global basis to address key issues concerning food security, biotechnology, stewardship, trade and producer image. The organizations will function under the name, MAIZALL—The International Maize Alliance.

While the United States and Colombia will both benefit from the ratification of the free trade pact, a proposed biotech regulation has the potential to put the country's corn imports from all sources, including the U.S., at risk. With a vision of advancing the understanding and value of international trade, The Grains Foundation is dedicated to developing the next generation of agriculture professionals through the International Collegiate Agricultural Leadership (I-CAL) program. Each year, in cooperation with the National FFA Organization, I-CAL sends 12 U.S. college students overseas to experience different areas in the agricultural industry.
