Barley - Production and Exports

Barley is a versatile and useful crop with applications ranging from feed and food production to beverage manufacturing. Most barley grown in the United States is intended for malting purposes because of the premium it commands. Approximately three out of every four bushels grown in the United States is used for food/beverage production. Nevertheless, the United States is a consistent top ten global exporter of barley. In the 2010/2011 crop marketing year (June 1-May 31), Tunisia took the majority of U.S. barley, accounting for more than 60% of the exports. Following Tunisia, were Canada and Morocco, each comprising 12% of the U.S. barley export market.
