Low-oil DDGS Widely Available, but Buyers Need to Ask Questions

Low-oil distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are becoming more widely available in the United States and in export channels as ethanol plants, which produce the feed co-product, continue to install corn oil extraction equipment.The extraction equipment removes a portion of the non-food grade corn oil during the ethanol process, making it available for other uses such as biodiesel or animal feed. This changes the feeding characteristics and value of the DDGS, however.

Currently, Taiwan has a zero tolerance policy that, if enforced, would prevent a shipment from entering Taiwan if trace amounts of an unapproved biotech event were detected.

Keynoting the 2012 Feed Latina Congress in Punta del Este, Uruguay, U.S. Grains Council Vice Chairman Julius Schaaf emphasized that competition does not preclude cooperation on common priorities. For U.S. and South American feed grains producers, such issues include market access, greater understanding and acceptance of food security through trade, and increased international acceptance of biotechnology.

There is still no substitute for personal relationships. When it comes to buying grain and feed ingredients such as U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), making phone calls and searching the Internet doesn't always lead to the right contact. That is why the U.S. Grains Council's Export Exchange 2012 conference in Minneapolis, Minn., helped drive sales far into the future.
"The U.S. Grains Council has been able to identify the key people and put them all together," said Sebastien Lavoie of Agri-Marche at Export Exchange. "It's a big world but it's a small one when you concentrate all the key players together, and that's a tough job to do, to open doors like that."

"We had an eye opening tour," said Arief Widjaja of Japfa Comfeed in Indonesia. Widjaja was part of a team from Indonesia and Southeast Asia that visited a farm to learn how feed grains are produced and handled before moving through a transloading facility and export terminal.
