It's official. The classification of U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as a non-hazardous cargo became final and mandatory under the code of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on Jan. 1, 2013. This was the culmination of a process initiated by the U.S. Grains Council in 2010 in coordination with DDGS producers and shippers and the U.S. Coast Guard, which is the official U.S. representative to the IMO.

By Cary Sifferath, U.S. Grains Council Regional Director for the Middle East and AfricaIn September 2012, the U.S. Grains Council reported that after a three and a half year effort, Algeria removed the value added tax (VAT) and custom tax on all feed imports, including corn, distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and corn gluten feed (CGF) until December 2012. The VAT and custom tax for DDGS and CGF had previously been set at 17 percent and 30 percent, resulting in no U.S. DDGS or CGF exports to Algeria. Corn VAT and custom tax had previously been set at 7 percent and 5 percent.

The U.S. Grains Council has always recognized that relationship building was key to increasing exports with current and prospective international customers. In 2012, these relationships helped the Council serve as a critical resource when foreign buyers, in response to the drought, had questions about U.S. crop conditions. The Council's trade servicing initiatives have reassured buyers that the United States would remain open for business despite the drought.
