EU Export Update: Sorghum Leads the Way

A combination of high ingredient prices and aggressive U.S. Grains Council marketing efforts is producing renewed sales of U.S. sorghum, corn gluten feed (CGF), and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) into the European Union (EU).
Sorghum shipments, primarily bound for Spain, with smaller shipments to France and the Netherlands, stood at 458,000 metric tons (18 million bushels) as of March 10. Outstanding sales totaled an additional 223,000 tons (8.8 million bushels).

The U.S. Grains Council is keeping a close eye on its largest corn and second-largest barley and sorghum market as it begins its recovery process from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated eastern Japan last week.
While no official reports on total grain trade impact have been made known to the Council, major importing facilities in northern mainland Japan have been severely damaged by the natural disaster, causing some to be not operational for the time being. The affected area accounts for roughly 30 percent of Japan’s 25 million metric ton total compound feed production capacity. While the extent of actual damage is still being assessed, much of the damaged capacity is being covered

Malting barley producers in Montana’s Golden Triangle increased their contracted acres with a Mexican brewery seven-fold this past week, entering the fourth year of a business relationship begun from simple introductions.
