Direct contracting barley is a crucial aspect of the barley procurement practice in the brewing industry. Over the past 10 years, the U.S. Grains Council has hosted Mexican brewing teams with representatives from Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma (CCM) and Grupo Modelo in an effort to connect with U.S. barley growers and update them on the status of the U.S. barley crop.

Last month, the U.S. Grains Council, in cooperation with McKay Seed Company Inc., conducted a seminar on U.S. barley for 19 barley millers, processors, importer-distributers and food manufacturers in Seoul, South Korea.
Mckay Seed Co.'s CEO Dan W. McKay gave a presentation on all aspects of U.S. barley, including U.S. barley production and export, the various types of barley produced in the United States, barley grades and grade requirements, and the importance of high beta glucan barley.

North Dakota has regained its number 1 ranking in barley acreage for 2012, planting 1,140,000 acres, a 185 percent increase over 2011. The following table provides a history of barley acreage for member states of the National Barley Growers Association (data source: USDA-NASS). While barley harvest is still in its early stages, farmers are generally optimistic about their crop. Early yield indications for U.S. barley are in the 50 to 65 bushel per acre range, despite high temperatures later in the season that impacted yields.

The U.S. Grains Council’s Taiwan office participated in the USA Pavilion during the 22nd annual Taipei International Food Show from June 27 to 30. This has been one of the most influential food shows in Asia since 1991, highlighting the latest and best in the culinary world, and continues to expand every year.
Our office introduced the health characteristics of U.S. high beta-glucan barley and food products made from U.S. barley to more than 50,000 visitors, including local and other overseas industry professionals.
Korea, US FTA Opens Doors for US Food Barley Export

More than a dozen local buyers have registered for the allocation of new duty-free tariff rate quotas of 2,500 metric tons (115,000 bushels) for this year. Some have already purchased several containers of U.S. barley for food applications.
The duty-free volumes will grow 2 percent each year with tariffs being completely phased out by 2026.
