U.S. Grains Council director in Latin America Kurt Shultz traveled to Colombia last week to find the lack of progress on the U.S.-Colombia Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) is continuing to have a devastating impact on U.S. corn, soybean and wheat producers. Colombia is a traditional market for U.S. corn producers, importing approximately 3 million metric tons (118 million bushels) of yellow corn annually.
Currently utilizing approximately 700,000 metric tons of U.S. distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) per year at its U.S. feed mills, Tyson Foods Inc. has utilized DDGS in its rations since April 2004, according to Phillip Smith, poultry nutritionist for Tyson, who will speak at the upcoming Export Exchange 2010.
Monday, a team of Japanese opinion leaders, sponsored by the U.S. Grains Council and the Missouri Corn Growers Association, toured two family farms in St. Charles, Mo., to receive a firsthand look at U.S. corn production and learn more about how biotechnology is helping corn farmers meet the growing demand for feed, food, fuel and exports.
The U.S. Grains Council escorted the senior purchasing manager of the world’s largest dairy operation on a week-long travel throughout the United States, introducing him to Council members and exporters of U.S. corn. Daniel Button of Almarai, based in Saudi Arabia, came to the United States to meet suppliers and purchase U.S. corn. Button was accompanied by Alvaro Cordero, USGC manager of international operations.
The U.S. Grains Council received word on Wednesday that Israel purchased 40,000 metric tons (1.6 million bushels) of U.S. sorghum, with intentions to purchase 60-80,000 tons (2.4-3.1 million bushels) in the near future. This purchase is a direct result of the recent agricultural export ban in Russia and the short supply of grain in Ukraine, where Israel generally fulfills its import needs.
